Treatment

The obvious method, although not always practical, is to avoid the substances we are exposed to that may be causing our allergies. In severe cases though, immunotherapy (allergy shots) may be ordered by a physician. Once you have your allergy test report, you may consult your physician to ascertain whether or not you are a candidate for allergy shots. If so, your physician may order an original treatment set directly from Spectrum Health Care. A prescription form is required as well as insurance information or prepayment of the treatment sets.

Immunotherapy sets are manufactured specifically for an individual patient based upon the physician's prescription indicating the allergens prescribed. Each set is made up of purified extracts of the substances that the patient is allergic to. Treatment begins with low doses, with gradual increases in the time interval between shots and the dosage. Treatment serves to increase the patient's natural resistance to the substances that trigger the unpleasant allergic symptoms.

Immunity does not occur immediately but many patients' do feel better with reduced symptoms very early on. Once the body's immunity has been stabilized, a maintenance dose is usually given every few weeks.

Immunotherapy is available only as a treatment for airborne allergens i.e. grasses, trees, weeds, fungi (molds), and animal dander. In the case of food allergies, treatment is effected via a combination of avoidance, rotation and/or elimination of the offending foods from the diet.
